The Dragon Blood Tree (Dracaena draco) is native to the canary - TopicsExpress

The Dragon Blood Tree (Dracaena draco) is native to the canary islands. The larger specimen are fairly old and not around everywhere. Belonging to the family of Asparagus (!), this tree-like plant reaches an umbrella-like habit with lots of branches. A bit of light history: In 1799, Alexander von Humbold went on his 5 years long expedition to south america. On his way there he stopped at Tenerife for 7 days. In his memories he mentioned the dragon tree. For the Guanches which where the aborigine people of the canary islands the Dragon tree was a holy tree. The oldest Dragon Blood Tree lives in Icod de los Vinos, Tenerife and is estimated 250, 365, and 1000 or more years. I don’t care how old it is. I have the greatest respect to this tree no matter how old it is. I drew those ones in La Laguna, Plaza de la conception, Tenerife. Compared to the one in Icod de los Vinos its is small. But I love the way it stands downtown and is integrated in urban live.
