The Dreaded Second Verse I believe that the most difficult part - TopicsExpress

The Dreaded Second Verse I believe that the most difficult part of a song to write is the second verse. Most of us find it easy to start a song and to write a chorus. Then, we struggle to bring it home. There are probably several reasons we struggle with second verses. Here are a couple I have encountered: 1) Im trying to write a song that doesnt have legs. My idea is not really strong enough to carry a whole song. It may be too limited in its scope to develop into a song by itself. Sometimes, a new hook is needed that is more broad so you have more information to develop. 2) I said too much in the first verse. Sometimes I cover so much ground in the first verse that I dont leave myself anywhere to go. So, I have to back up and divided the information in my first verse into several parts that I can dig into more deeply. 3) My first verse started too late in the story. At times, I have had to turn my first verse into my second verse and write a NEW first verse. 4) I didnt know where I was headed when I started the song. At times, I have started a song without a hook and I sort of wandered around until I found something. On those occasions when I do that, I often find myself having trouble with the second verse because the whole song has just sort of wandered along with little or no direction. If you struggle with second verses, give your song a checkup and see if any of these ailments apply. Then, rework your song to get it right! Marty Dodson
