The Dream A visitor came to a Chishti pir. This visitor wanted to demonstrate his own knowledge and intended to overpower the Chishti pir in a debate. When he entered, he began interrupting the pirs discourse, correcting him repeatedly. The pir ignored the interruptions and carried on. The visitor began to get more obnoxious by the minute. A while later, the Chishti pir started talking of dreams. He suddenly turned to his visitor and asked him, esteemed sir, can I ask you to explain to me a strange dream that I had yesterday night? It is quite confusing and maybe a wise man like you could enlighten me. The Sufi told the visitor that both of them were in the dream. The Chishti pir then went on to describe the dream: “I saw your hand immersed in a jar of honey, while my hand was immersed in the latrine”. The visitor hastened to interpret: “It is quite obvious! You are immersed in wrong pursuits whereas I am leading a righteous life”. “But sir, the Sufi continued, “there is more to the dream”. The visitor asked him to continue. The Chishti pir then went on: “You were licking my hand and I was licking yours”.
