The EVIL of Islam - Perception or Reality ~Uncle Sams Misguided Children In the days following the attack, the National Review published a number of articles by Andrew C. McCarthy dealing with the massacre at the Charlie Hebdo headquarters in Paris. In Don’t Blame Charlie Hebdo Mass Murder on Extremism, McCarthy presents well-reasoned arguments that it isn’t just extremists who subscribe to sharia law who favor death as the preferred means of dealing with “infidels.” In McCarthy’s view, whether through murderous actions or failure to condemn such actions, virtually every follower of Islam condones what is commonly referred to as “extremist behavior.” That would classify every Muslim as a proponent of “death to infidels.” Such a conclusion is false. However, there is a strong current of truth running through it: NO CONDEMNATION FROM “MAINSTREAM MUSLIMS” Following every attack carried out by “Muslim extremists”– from the 9/11 attacks to the assault in Benghazi, to the execution of two New York City police officers, to the massacre at Charlie Hebdo– there has been little, if any, expression of outrage or condemnation from the Islamic community. “ISIS”, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, contains the operative word “Islamic.” Yet after each atrocity committed by ISIS, there has been little, if any, expression of outrage or condemnation from the Islamic community. When women were brutalized by Muslim extremists, there was little, if any, expression of outrage or condemnation from the Islamic community. The list goes on and on, leaving one to wonder whether any Muslims believe in peaceful resolutions to conflicts. Obviously, some do, yet the protracted silence in the wake of murder and brutality brings into question whether they are peaceful because they choose not to be violent themselves, yet condone violence by others in the name of Allah. THE MANDATE Many of McCarthy’s points are based on his reading of Islamic scripture and sharia law. He states, “As I detailed in Spring Fever: The Illusion of Islamic Democracy, the literalist construction of sharia that Islamic supremacists seek to enforce is “literal” precisely because it comes from Islamic scripture, not from some purportedly “extremist” fabrication of Islam. Moreover, this “classical sharia” is enthusiastically endorsed in principle by several of the most influential institutions in the Islamic Middle East, which explains why it is routinely put into practice when Islamists are given — or seize — the opportunity to rule over a territory.” An argument counter to McCarthy’s findings is that sharia law is part of ancient writings and not part of current mainstream Islam. That may be true, yet throughout the world, prominent imams promulgate the imposition of sharia. And again, as is true of other extremist aspects of the religion, there is no protestation from “mainstream Muslims.” AN UNDERTONE OF VIOLENCE At the core of the debate as to whether all Muslims are either outright or tacit terrorists is the Qur’an (Koran) itself. Its teachings are interpreted in numerous and conflicting ways, yet regardless of interpretation, at a minimum, the Qur’an has an undertone of violence against non-believers. In combination with the deafening silence from the Muslim community in the wake murder and brutality, the Qur’an’s undertone gives credence to the concept that virtually all Muslims are extremists. Whether or not that’s an accurate appraisal is irrelevant. Until the mainstream Muslim community speaks out against the murders and brutality carried out by “extremists,” the perception of Islam as evil will wear the cloak of reality. misguidedchildren/religion/2015/01/evil-islam-perception-reality/35769
