The East Texas Arboretum, in Athens, TX, 75 miles SE of Dallas, is a 100 acre garden, nature preserve, teaching facility & museum complex. It hosted an exhibition and artists residency by world-renowned stone artists from Zimbabwe. There are modern meeting rooms, an outdoor covered pavilion for concerts, weddings, etc.. There is an 1850s farm house furnished with period furniture. A kitchen garden is maintained near the back door. There is an 1890s milking barn, a replica of an early Texas School House, and a see-through bee hive that allows children to observe the honey making process. There are 2 miles of hiking trails through an area that includes trees, with winding, spring-fed streams, flowers, ferns, native plums, berries, camouflaged frogs, insects, and even deer. A highlight of the forest trail is115-foot is a suspension bridge built over a bog that is home to, among other things the carnivorous & rare Pitcher Plant, (which traps and consumes insects.) https://youtube/watch?v=LN6Qn1ojTTw
