The Editors of Forum for Modern Language Studies invite - TopicsExpress

The Editors of Forum for Modern Language Studies invite submissions for The Forum Prize 2014 competition, on the subject of Literature and Terror. While representations of terror(ism) abound in contemporary culture, from the literary novel to the Hollywood movie, relatively little attention is paid to the long history of ties between culture and terrorism that have helped to shape our response to political violence and its representations. Authors may wish to address one or more of the following questions: What kinds of relationship exist between literary texts and various forms of terrorism — anarchism, radical leftism, Islamic fundamentalism, urban guerrilla movements, ‘State’ terrorism, and so on? How do fictional texts represent, support or subvert the politics and practice of terror? To what extent does literary production problematize the term “terror(ism)” at the interface of the political and the aesthetic? How far has the fictional representation of terrorism contributed to debates concerning multiculturalism, national self-determination, immigration, political violence, and the limits of liberal democracy? Can a text be understood as “terroristic” in itself? What do linguistic or textual – as opposed to purely political - analyses of discourses of terror or literary representations of such contribute to our understanding of terror and our responses to it? What of terror as an aesthetic category, divorced from any political connotations, and what distinguishes it from horror? How has the notion of terror(ism) been shaped by textual production over time? How has terrorism actively contributed to the development of particular literary forms (and vice versa)? The winner’s prize will consist of: 1. Publication of the winning essay in the next appropriate volume of Forum for Modern Language Studies 2. A cheque for £500 A panel of judges will read all entries, which will be assessed anonymously. At the judges’ discretion, a runner-up prize of £200 may be awarded. The Editors may commission for publication any entries that are highly commended by the judges. Submissions may address literature of any period, from a literary or linguistic perspective, and in any of the languages covered by the journal (usually English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian, but we will consider others too). The competition is open to all researchers, whether established or early-career: it is worth noting that previous competitions have been won by scholars in both categories. Entry requirements and Submission details for the Forum Prize 2014 The closing date for entries is Friday 28 March 2014. Entries must be written in English and should be no more than 6,500 words in length including notes, should conform to MHRA style, and must be accompanied by an abstract (approx. 150 words) summarizing the principal arguments and making clear the relevance of the article to the competition topic. Articles should be submitted online at fmls.oxfordjournals.org, flagged as Forum Prize entries, and follow the guidelines for authors. We will also accept submissions by email or hard copy and disc, if there is a compelling reason: in this case, please contact the Administrative Editor, Dr Robin MacKenzie ([email protected]).
