The Ego is like a membrane that surrounds our consciousness. It can be see through or solid, soft or hard. The growth of our consciousness, of all the things that make us who we are, is limited by the ego. The softer the ego, or the more humble we are, the more our consciousness can grow. But when our Ego is hardened by Pride, it forms a shell. That shell gives the illusion of protection and it also limits our growth. It also makes the impacts to our self much more severe because instead of some new idea or correction landing on the pillow of our mind, it meets a hardened skin that easily bruises or a shell that breaks. This is where so many of our daily struggles becomes drama and nightmares. Our world spends too much time trying to harden that shell instead of soften it. Fear is supposed to keep us sharp, not force us behind walls. So as the saying goes, Success is just outside of our comfort zone, not within it.
