The Eid Fair(Episode #5) The namaaz (Muslim prayer, offered five times a day) is over. People are embracing each other. Then starts the invasion on the shops of sweets and toys! This group of villagers is not less eager in this respect than the boys. See this is trapeze! Pay one paisa and get in. Sometimes you will experience the excitement of touching the sky and then sometimes of falling down. This the merry—go—round, elephants, horses, camels are adjoined to rods. Pay one paisa and enjoy twenty five rounds. Mahmud, Mohsin, Noore and Shammi board these elephants and horses. Haamid is standing far away. He has only three paisa. He cannot spend a third of his treasure on this small joy. Everybody gets off the merry—go—round. Now they will purchase toys. There is a row of shops there. Different types of toys are there—soldier, king, lawyer, water—filler and hermit. Wow! Such beautiful toys! They seem so real as if they will speak any time. Mahmud buys the soldier, wearing khaki dress and red turban, with a gun on his soldiers; it seems to be parading. Mohsin liked the water—carrier. Its back is bent, with a water bag on it and it is holding the mouth of water—bag with one hand. How happy it looks! Maybe the water—carrier is singing a song and is about to pour water from the bag. Noore has his heart in the lawyer. Ah! What intelligence shines on its face! Black gown, underneath is white dress with a fob watch with a golden chain in front pocket, a law book in one of the hands. It looks like coming from a courtroom having presented an argument. All these toys cost two paisa each. Haamid has a total of three paisa, how can he afford such expensive toys? If by chance the toy falls of hands, it will break into pieces. Some drops of water and the entire colour would come off. What would he do with such toys, what use are these! Mohsin says— ‘My water—carrier will bring water every day, in the morning and in the evening.’ Mahmud— ‘And my soldier will watch and protect my house, if any thief comes he will immediately fire from the gun.’ Noore— ‘And my lawyer will fight many cases.’ Shammi— ‘And my washer —man will wash the clothes daily.’ Haamid denounces the toys— These are made of only clay, if these fall these will break into pieces; but he watches towards the toys with greedy eyes and wants to hold these in his hands if only for a short while. His hands lurch forward spontaneously, but children are not so generous, especially when the fad is new. Haamid’s greed remains unfulfilled.
