The Eleven Mile House at 9150 south State Street was built in 1838 of mixed upright log and frame construction as a stage hotel/farmers tavern. Known as the Smith Tavern for years it was bought by Charles Fraatz in the 1870s and maintained as a tavern well into the 20th Century. It was a popular resting stop for folks heading south (the Dutch immigrants who settled Roseland in 1849 stopped here)as well as farmers heading north to the Haymarket with their wagons full of produce. Torn down about 1960 without a whimper in the local press to make room for the Dan Ryan Expressway. Here it is about 1879 captured by an unknown photographer including a detail of folks on the porch...the view is to the SW...
