The Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline has been facing fierce - TopicsExpress

The Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline has been facing fierce opposition over the way it would endanger the protected Northern Pacific humpback whales. So, with the final decision on the Enbridge pipeline only a couple months away, the Harper government celebrated Earth Day by downgrading the humpback whales protected status -- going against the vast majority of recommendations from the groups it consulted. As of this week, the whales are no longer threatened “threatened”, but a “species of concern”, freeing up the Northern Gateway pipeline from legal obligations over exposing humpbacks to oil spills, habitat destruction, and collisions with supertankers. Tell the Harper government: dont take humpback whales off the threatened species list. The Northern Pacific humpback whale is one of the largest creatures in the world, growing up to 16 meters and living for half a century, but decades of hunting and environmental destruction have threatened the species’ survival. For centuries, we have been flattening forests, draining lakes, and wiping out entire ecosystems in order to feed an insatiable hunger for fossil fuels. We don’t simply need more Stuff -- we need a better planet, and we need to protect the animals we have. If we run hundreds of tankers of tar sands bitumen through the whales’ homes, it’s only a matter of time before disaster will strike. Don’t let whales get written out of the Story, take action today! Thanks for all you do!
