The End of a school. This is all that is left of my elementary school tonight. The front door frame. I pause to remember the memories this beautiful building. So many children passed through this doorway. The building, itself, ushered in a new era in Roanoke- one that beat The Depression and quickly went to war. One that grudgingly accepted desegregation. One that endured the latest and greatest education fads: Dick and Jane, Bluebirds, SRA Reading Lab, New Math. It stubbornly held on to its past, even after it was closed and turned into county police headquarters. After the police abandoned, it patiently waited until the county needed it as a temporary county administration building. Then it was liquidated and sold off to the state so that the regional morgue could expand, a scary prospect...If you build it, they will come.
