The English language includes very distinct L and R sounds. These can be quite challenging for students to master if their native language (e.g., Korean) includes only a hybrid L/R sound that includes a movement of the tongue from the front to the back of the mouth to produce the entire sound. In English, the L and R sounds are separate, distinct, comparably opposite in execution, like yin and yang. Each is distinct, so the tongue stays in one place for each. To produce an R sound in English, PULL your tongue all the way to the back of your mouth, far away from your lips and teeth. Tighten your facial muscles and your lips into a small tight circle to produce an R sound. Contrarily, to produce an L sound in English, PUSH your tongue all the way to the front of your mouth until it sticks out past your teeth. Tense your tongue so it becomes round and not flat. Draw your lips back as far as they can go. The L sound is produced with the lips drawn back and away and the tongue in front of the teeth.
