The Epitome The word ‘Calligraphy’ comes from the Ancient Greek word kallos – meaning beauty – and graphẽ - meaning writing. Calligraphy is not only a visual art relating to writing, which has been a common form of art among several various cultures throughout the centuries but it is also a set of skills and techniques for the ways in which words are positioned and inscribed so that they may show integrity and harmony. One of the most recognisable forms of calligraphy can be found in the Latin scripts which were first found in Rome in 600 BC carved on stones and painted on walls. While the history of this impressive art form is vast, the Ahlulbayt TV documentary “The Epitome” will be zeroing in on the history of Islamic Calligraphy. Islamic Calligraphy is sometimes referred to as Arabic Calligraphy because of its association with the writing of and preservation of the Holy Qur’an. In Arabic the term used to refer to calligraphy is ‘Khatt’(خط) derived from the word line or construction. calligraphy Across the world Islamic artists have utilized this style of art and calligraphy to decorate our places of worship with the Holy names of Allah and of the Ahlulbayt (as). A very prominent image that comes to mind when one thinks of Islamic Calligraphy is that of the minarets of Imam Reza’s (as) shrine in Mashhad. Such artistic illustrations have been used to show the important names and valuable sayings within our beautiful religion. These then invoke powerful feelings of love, pride, joy and peace. Art is a powerful medium through which artists have been able to embody and capture the greatness of Islam. The Epitome will showcase the many different artists engaging in the manifestation of Islamic Calligraphy which is then used to beautify scripts and architecture.
