The Essence of Fasting Some Muslims fast for different purposes, some it is because others are fasting and he wants to join them, while to some it is because merely to show that they are Muslims. I don’t have aany doubt that if we know the essence and quintessence of fasting as ordained by Allah in this month, we will then appreciate better the love and mercy of Allah over us. A Mumeen should be able to situate his objectives in all of the following so as to be able to get the full reward. Seeking the pleasure of Allah, to get taqwa– fear of God, piety and God consciousness in all that we do, not only in Ramadan but always. Another is for the expiation of our sins. It is also to gain admittance into al-janah. Both are related in that it is when you are made to be free of sins that al-janah becomes the destination. What this means is that if our sins are forgiven and we gain nearness to Him, He will bestow us with al-janah. Allah has promised that if we seek forgiveness during the month, He will bless us abundantly. Fasting is meant also to seek the reward of Allah in this world and hereafter, no being will observe the fast as he is supposed to do and remain untouched by the mercy and blessings of Allah. Another thing fasting is set to do is to acquire the grace of ashifau. This means right of intercession. If you fast, your fast will intercede for you. It is also to increase our will power and heath and in turn decrease our worldly desire, and attain righteousness. All the activities of Ramadan are special and aim to make man attain righteousness. Importantly, fasting narrows the path of the Satan, makes Satan uncomfortable and put him in coma. Fasting is also a shield for the believer, Fasting helps us to do what is right and jettison what is wrong. A fasting businessman or public servant must show honesty and righteousness. You will not be wayward, corrupt and fraudulent. Now the question is can a person achieve all these while fasting. The answer is yes. In fact that is the essence of fasting. That is why Allah (SWT) in the verses that fasting were ordained for us, it ended with laaha lakum tataquun. If we fast in the right way and excercise the required self restraint on all these worldly issues, Insha Allah, it is a sure way to realise the full benefits of Ramadan. Like I said early it is the preconceived reason we had on fasting that undermine the realisation of full Ramadan blessings. Definitely, if a person is fasting because he wanted to join others in fasting or because he wanted to be recognised as Muslim, he may not achieve all of these because his thinking is already skewed to a particular goal.
