The European Space Agencys Gaia satellite was launched earlier today on a Soyuz rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guyana. Gaias mission is to produce the most accurate map yet of the Milky Way - by determining the positions and motions of roughly 100 billion stars. From the map, astronomers will infer the Milky Ways dynamical history and the distribution of dark matter that pervades our galaxy and others.
