The European Union has set a new global standard after the European Council approved a cut of at least 40% in Europes greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving savings of at least 30% in energy efficiency across the EU, also by 2030. President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durão Barroso said this agreement keeps Europe firmly in the driving seat in the international climate talks ahead of Paris Summit next year and the Climate Change Conference of Parties (COP 20) in Lima later this year, adding it is an ambitious goal that others should follow. This 2030 package is very good news for our fight against climate change. No player in the world is as ambitious as the European Union when it comes to cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, the proof that it is ambitious is that we are now going from a goal of 20% cut by 2020 compared to 1990 to 40% by 2030 - doubling the effort. So, this is indeed a very ambitious, but also achievable target. This agreement is also vital for our energy security. By cutting our emissions, increasing renewables to at least 27% and saving energy, we reduce our dependency on imported fossil fuels from unstable or unreliable suppliers. We have set the example and others should follow. Europe accounts for only 11% of global emissions, so we need all others to step up to the plate. said President Barroso. europa.eu/rapid/press-release_SPEECH-14-719_en.htm
