The European Union welcomes todays adoption of the resolution of the moratorium on the Death Penalty in the 3rd Committee of the United Nations. This is the fourth time this important resolution has been adopted, since its introduction in 2007, and we are delighted to see the great support the resolution has received with once again, this year with an improved record of 114 positive votes. The resolution has been presented by a cross-regional group of 95 cosponsors. European Union conviction for the abolition of the death penalty is a key principle of its human rights policy, we are therefore pleased to see that the global trend continues towards the abolition of the death penalty.
