The FRIM-ITTO REDDES Project has conducted a stakeholders’ consultation workshop on “Identifying and Addressing Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Pahang State, Malaysia” at Awana Hotel, Genting Highlands, Pahang on 7- 9 December 2014. The workshop, which was part of the activities involving major stakeholders under the FRIM-ITTO REDDES Project entitled “Forest Degradation and Emissions through Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) in Peninsular Malaysia” (2013-2015), aimed to consult and obtain feedback on the major drivers of deforestation in the Pahang state. The views of these key stakeholders were also being sought on how to address these drivers in the effort to understand the main contributors so that Pahang would be able to manage their land use wisely. The workshop, launched by the Pahang Forestry Department (FD) Director, Dato’ Mohd Paiz Kamaruzaman, was attended by 35 participants. The participants consisted mainly of representatives from government agencies particularly from the state including the Pahang FD, Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID), Economic Planning Division, Department of Town and Rural Planning, and Department of Environment; and the Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia (FDPM). The participants also included representatives from Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), and non-governmental organisations such as the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS). The workshop, co-organised by Pahang FD and LEAF, featured three main speakers from Pahang FD, LEAF and FRIM. Broadhead presented a decision tool developed by LEAF for the ASEAN Resource Knowledge Network on how to identify and address drivers of deforestation. The FRIM-ITTO REDDES Project is adopting the tool in a Malaysian context, particularly for the Pahang state. Pahang FD representative, Lim Kee Leng, presented some figures on the current status of the Pahang forest and forestry-related industry as well as the department’s future plans and management strategy; whilst FRIM researcher, Hamdan Omar, presented the project’s results on the assessment of land use changes over 20 years to identify the drivers of deforestation in Pahang. ~ PM
