The Fallen 03rd October This is a sad day for the Rhodesian Air Force because we lost three members in two incidents on the same operation. Another five members of the armed forces are also remembered today and thirteen during the weekend. 1976 – Rfn Gert Jacobsz (aged 24), NS Army, KOAS from gunshot wounds, Fairmile Motel, Gwelo, Op Grapple. 1977 – Pte David Adams (aged 28), 1RHU RDR, KIA. 1977 – Cpl Edward Fynn (aged 27), 1RHU RDR, KIA. (Both RDR members above were KIA by a landmine explosion.) 1977 – DA Enock Dube, Regular Intaf, DOAS. 1979 - Air Lt – Plt Brian Gordon, No 1 Sqn RhAF, KIA by ground fire during Op Miracle in Mozambique whilst flying a Hunter FGA9 R1821. Gordon, who was the lead aircraft in a pair, went down to get a better view of the target, a very long and heavily armed convoy. Beryl Salt in “Pride of Eagles” states that there is no known grave. His body was never recovered, but part of the wreckage was displayed in Maputo. An ex-RhAF tech, Bob Manser, located and marked the spot in October/November 2007. 1979 - Flt Lt – Plt Kevin Peinke MFC (aged 25), No 5 Sqn RhAF, KIA. 1979 - Flt Lt – Nav Johannes Strydom, No 5 Sqn RhAF, KIA. (Both of the airmen above were KIA by ground fire during Op Miracle in Chimoio, Mozambique, whilst flying a Canberra B2 R5203. Their bodies were never recovered, but part of the wreckage was displayed in Maputo. An ex-RhAF tech, Bob Manser, located and marked the spot in October/November 2007. 1979 – Pte Robert Pasina, 1(Indp) Coy RAR, KIA. The Fallen 04th October 1973 – T/L/Cpl Michael Bailey (aged 23), 1st Bn RLI, DOAS from chemical poisoning, western bank, Mazoe Dam. 1976 – Gnr Donald Fulton (aged 28), 1st Field Regt RhA, KOAS from multiple fractures in a vehicle accident, New Years Gift Store, 20 km from Chipinga, Op Thrasher. 1977 – L/Cpl Thomas Banga, 2nd Bn RAR, DOAS. 1977 – L/Cpl Peter “Pete” Garnett MFC, 11 Tp, 3 Cdo, 1st Bn RLI, KIA in the Op Thrasher area. He received his MFC (Ops) for being particularly aggressive during the Battle of Hill 31 in Mutasa TTL on 15 November 1976. 1978 – Cst Aloice Makhondo (aged 25), Uniform BSAP, KIA. 1978 – Aux Cst Erinos Marilele (aged 28), PR BSAP, KIA. 1978 – Sgt Leonard Matshalaga (aged 25), Uniform BSAP, KIA. (All three policemen above were KIA in the Maranda TTL, Nuanetsi area, Op Repulse.) 1978 – Sgt Maj Rufu Muyezwa (aged 40), Uniform BSAP, KIA. 1978 – DSA Pauro (not his surname), Kp Prtn Intaf, DOAS. The Fallen 05th October 1977 – Cst Bernard Chianike (aged 33), Uniform BSAP, DOAS in Harare Hospital from injuries received in a motor cycle accident on 30 September. 1978 – Cst Thomas Choruwa (aged 25), ZA Tp SU BSAP, Murdered by CTs whilst on leave at his home in the Hartley area. 1978 – Sgt M.D. Steele, RIC, KOAS in a vehicle accident. 1979 – Aux Cst Pangai Dzingirayi (aged 25), PR BSAP, KOAS in Bikita, Op Repulse.
