The Fallen 28th November Twelve members of the Rhodesian forces are remembered today and another twelve during the weekend. 1972 – Fire-fighter Stanislaus Mukandatsama (aged 18), Thornhill RhAF, KOAS. Drowned in Dianas Pool, Melsetter. 1976 – Sgt Constantine Munengwa MFC (aged 34), 11 Pln, D Coy, 1st Bn RAR, KIA from gunshot wounds received in a contact in Bikita district, Op Repulse. The most senior Sergeant in his Company, he was widely respected for the excellent work he did on operations. He was a highly professional soldier as well as a keen sportsman, playing basketball and football for the Company. He had been recommended for promotion at the time of his death. 1976 – Cpl Tapson Ndaza (aged 27), D Coy, 1st Bn RAR, KIA from gunshot wounds in the same contact as Sgt Munengwa above. 1977 – WO1 Arthur “Barney” Barnes, RhAF, DOAS from a heart attack. 1977 – Temp Cpl Albert “Alfie” Tennant (aged 31), C Coy, 6th Bn RR, KIA. 1978 – DO Robert “Rob” Carruthers MCM(Post) (aged 23), Regular Intaf, KIA in a vehicle ambush, Chiswiti area, Mount Darwin, Op Hurricane, whilst travelling in between PVs in a 5-tonne Isuzu. Rob was manning a light machine gun when they were ambushed. He returned fire but was hit and killed instantly. 2 CTs were killed by return fire from the vehicle. His dog, Ishe, fled the scene and was never seen again. Rob, DO of Mukumbura at the time, was fluent in Shona and knew African laws and customs as well as any local. 1978 – L/Cpl Timothy “Tim” Murdock, 1 Pltn, 3(Indp) Coy RAR, KIA in a vehicle ambush, Inyanga, Op Thrasher. Andrew Dorking, fiancé of Timothys sister, Julia, writes, “They were escorting sticks back from Nyamaropa when the truck hit a landmine, followed by an ambush from about 200 yds away. Tim was the MAG gunner.” 1978 – DSA Zimba Muzenda, Kp Prtn Intaf, DOAS. 1979 – Spr F. Hanganayi, 3 Sqn RhE, KIA from shrapnel wounds received in a CT action. 1979 – FR John Mann (aged 32), PATU BSAP, KIA in a CT ambush in the Lutope area, Gokwe, Op Grapple. 1979 – FR Michael Rowland (aged 36), PR BSAP, KIA in a CT ambush in the Lutope area, Gokwe, Op Grapple, (Both BSAP members above were killed in the same ambush.) 1979 – Cst Andreas Zinjera (aged 23), Uniform BSAP, KIA. The Fallen 29th November 1977 – DSA Herod Mpofu, Kp Prtn Intaf, DOAS. 1977 – Sgt Obert Mulasi Bronze Baton for Bravery (aged 24), L Tp, SU BSAP, KOAS in a shooting accident in Ops area. 1977 – Kp Comm James Scott, PV Prtn Group GF, DOAS. 1978 – Pte Samuel Chilenje (aged 17), 1(Indp) Coy RAR, KOAS in a vehicle accident. 1978 – DSA Peter Munetsi, Kp Prtn Intaf, Murdered by CTs. 1978 – DSA Watson Muteta, Kp Prtn Intaf, DOAS. 1978 – DSA Phahlani Ndholvu, Kp Prtn Intaf, Murdered whilst on R&R by CTs, Luhonjana Line, Tjolotjo, Op Tangent. 1978 – Pte A. Nyoni (aged 28), 1(Indp) Coy RAR, KOAS in a vehicle accident. The Fallen 30th November 1969 – Snr Tech Johan van Vuuren (aged 20), New Sarum RhAF, KOAS. Died in Salisbury Central Hospital from injuries sustained in a collision with another car on the ring road at New Sarum. 1974 – S Sgt Patreck Pereira (aged 22), 2 Tspt Coy RDR, KOAS. Died in Gatooma Hospital (Asian Section) from multiple injuries. 1977 – Cpl Kenneth Tiernay, Army, KOAS. 1978 – FR Nesbit Chakaza, PR BSAP, Murdered by CTs in the Umtali area, Op Thrasher. Adrian
