The Famous Horse Drawn Carriages of Central Park have won the hearts and minds of undecided or uninformed folks in New York and beyond partially due to the wonderful letters to the editors of our widely-read NYC newspapers!! Politicians and public-policy folks read these letters also. Their importance cannot be underestimated! A good number of these excellent missives come from our supporters right here on this page! THE TIME IS NOW FOR A DELUGE OF THESE LETTERS!!!!! With the bill to BAN the NYC carriages being introduced TOMORROW, we need EVERYONE who is so inclined to EMAIL a letter to the editor to the two dueling daily tabloids here in NYC, The New York Daily News, The New York Post. Below are the links to the recent articles which appeared about us in these two papers. You can either write a letter about your own experience or thoughts on the carriages in NYC, or specifically respond to something written in one of these links (if it is the latter, please cite the article in your email with the date it was printed) Since the New York Daily News prints many letters each day, they prefer brief letters, up to one or two short paragraphs. The New York Post only prints a few letters each day, and they accept letters which are more lengthy (3-5 paragraphs or so) *EMAIL ADDRESS FOR LETTERS TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS: voicers@nydailynews *EMAIL ADDRESS FOR LETTERS TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW YORK POST: letters@nypost PLEASE put your name, address, and phone number in your email to either paper. (They only print name & town, but need the info to check authenticity. They will not print without this info) LINKS TO RECENT ARTICLES IN THE NY POST: nypost/2014/11/30/graphic-carriage-protest-leaves-child-in-tears/ nypost/2014/12/01/lackluster-support-for-de-blasios-horse-carriage-ban/ nypost/2014/12/01/de-blasio-to-propose-horse-carriage-ban-next-week/ nypost/2014/12/02/de-blasio-using-political-muscle-to-pass-carriage-horse-ban/ LINKS TO RECENT ARTICLES IN THE NY DAILY NEWS: nydailynews/new-york/boy-8-slams-de-blasio-plan-horse-carriages-article-1.2031029 nydailynews/news/politics/carriage-horse-drivers-uncertain-mayor-pushes-ban-article-1.2029737 nydailynews/blogs/dailypolitics/council-labor-committee-unites-horse-carriage-ban-blog-entry-1.2035197 nydailynews/new-york/residents-urge-city-council-fight-ban-horse-carriages-article-1.2031127 nydailynews/blogs/dailypolitics/horse-carriage-bill-transportation-committee-blog-entry-1.2033675 Some of our recent letters that were printed in the Daily News!!! Thanks for horses Bremerton, Wash.: As part of my family’s yearly Christmas movie ritual, I watched the classic “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York” with my granddaughter. We watched as Kevin hides in a horse carriage to escape the bad guys. This was my granddaughter’s first time seeing the carriages. She was enthralled and now wants to ride in a carriage pulled by horses in the park, surrounded by skyscrapers. The identity of New York City is so tied to the iconic carriages. I hope when I come to NYC to savor its sights and culture, I will be able to take my granddaughter on a horse-drawn carriage ride. Susan Sullivan Galloping down the wrong path Manhattan: Horse-drawn carriages have long been a part of the very fabric of our city. Indeed, because of their unique historical interest, rather than being banned they should be given landmark status. To ban them would be a monumental loss not only for our city but for the drivers and their families as well. When the mayor insists he arrived at his decision out of concern for the horses, he is being disingenuous, as he never bothered to visit the stables to see if they were being properly taken care of. Rather than making an informed decision, he is pushing this ban primarily because the anti-carriage industry funneled large amounts of money into his campaign. Show this mayor the money and he’ll follow you anywhere. But I must say, he is progressive. Since taking office he is getting progressively worse at fulfilling his mayoral responsibilities. Brian Madden Fight the power Foxboro, Mass.: I don’t personally know any carriage-horse drivers, but I do believe that, like a frog in a pot of boiling water, we can be hurt by abuses of power if they are discovered too late. I have loved horses the better part of my life, so naturally when I saw how one of the few remaining jobs for horses was coming under fire, I became incensed. I can’t believe how the carriage drivers have been allowed to be attacked for so long. I wrote to the carriage people, and here’s what I suggested: If you haven’t hired an attorney, the time to do it is now. I think the carriage horses and drivers have been disrespected long enough. Jeanne Lightbody Just say neigh Brooklyn: Our mayor wants to ban a NYC icon that will hurt the tourism industry and cost the jobs of many! Thumbs down, Mr. Mayor, and thumbs up to the Daily News for taking this to the front page. These animals have never been abused, and the carriage drivers need horsepower, just like drivers of yellow cabs. No horsepower, no income. Jules Pagano Horse sense Brooklyn: The late philosopher Martin Buber once wrote, “An animal’s eyes have the power to speak a great language.” Who is really speaking for the horses within the horse-carriage industry? It is not the false Dr. Dolittles from NYCLASS. Rather, it is the overwhelming majority of veterinarians who have testified for many government agencies as well as the ASPCA that the horses within this fine industry are safe and well taken care of by the stable owners, the stable workers and the drivers themselves. There has not been one reputable vet who has said that the horse-carriage industry is a threat to the lives of the horses. The veterinarians speak the language of science and health. The carriage-ban protesters speak the language of deceit and dubious finances. Fr. Brian Jordan Just say whoa Manhattan: The public is being told that the carriage horses are unfortunate creatures trapped in an abusive industry. In fact, carriage horses live very good horse lives: They’re well fed, well cared for and closely supervised, and are doing the job they were bred for. I am writing from personal knowledge as a horse owner. If the horses are “retired,” they will live lives of relative neglect. Some will be sent to slaughter. Susan Carlo A natural connection Manhattan: Thank you, Daily News, for staying on top of the carriage-horse controversy in NYC and championing the side of humanity, horses and common sense. In a world where so many animals are being pushed to the brink of extinction, and people in big cities are losing their connection with nature and animals, the impetus to fight for what we still have becomes more necessary. Patty Adjamine Mayoral manure Stroudsburg, Pa.: I’ve never gone on a carriage ride in Central Park. That said, leave the horses and carriage drivers alone! Who are you, Mayor de Blasio, to wipe out a tradition, an industry enjoyed by so many for so long? You are perhaps the worst mayor ever. James Dowling
