The Fathers Love Song by Mel Caldicott Love songs are successful – they warm the heart, move you to remember a lost love, make your heart skip a beat if you’re falling head over heels or give you that warm fuzzy feeling of happiness and contentment. The film Moulin Rouge epitomizes the power of the love song with its Love Song Medley sang by Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor. The ultimate feel good factor! The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. Zephaniah 3:17 The Bible tells us that God sings a love song over us. What a fantastic picture! The God of the universe singing and rejoicing over me! It’s almost too hard to comprehend isn’t it? Matt Redman wrote a song called “The Father’s Song” taken from these verses and it’s incredibly moving and beautiful. A deep expression of God’s love. Yet sadly for so many of us it can be hard to really accept. This is something I really struggle with. Knowing God’s love and really accepting it in your heart are two different things. There are many things that create blockages to us being able to receive God’s love fully. The ways in which we have been damaged by people who have made us believe in small or big ways that we are worthless, unlovable and unimportant. Our own failures and sense of guilt that we have carried around with us for too long. The disappointments we have suffered during the course of our lives making us lose hope in the good things. This verse not only describes God singing over us but rejoicing over us with singing. God is celebrating our very existence! He takes great delight in you. Whatever lies we have believed about ourselves over the course of our life we need to know this in our hearts. The Word of God is Truth and it is a sad thing that all too often it is the lies that shape us to be who we are. God knows everything about us and is still absolutely crazy about us! God is the perfect expression of love and it doesn’t matter what we have done or what people have done to us – we can come to Him and know that perfect love. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 summarises that perfect love so that we can understand more the way in which God loves and how different this often is to our human understanding and experience. Love is patient. love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. So, as we come before God in our prayer times let us allow Him to quiet us with His love, open our hearts and listen to this song of joy that He sings over us every time we meet with Him. What experiences do you have of knowing God’s love in a powerful way? Have you been damaged in ways that make it hard for you to receive God’s love? Spend some time praying about this today.
