The Federal Government has agreed to lower entry requirements into technical education institutes for Sarawakians and Sabahans, following a recent request from Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem. The ministry has also extended the application deadline for school leavers from the two states from Jan 12 until Jan 31. Human Resources Minister Datuk Richard Riot, who is from Sarawak, told reporters here on Friday the twin moves were to enable more east Malaysian youths to gain access to technical education. Drawing the example of the ministrys three institutes in Sarawak, he said two had lower than expected enrollment. At Kota Samarahans Industrial Training Institute, the enrollment was 70% of the colleges capacity. Only Miris institute is fully enrolled. Actually it has an enrollment of 110%, which is good, driven by Miris oil and gas industry, Riot told a press conference. Riot said the lowering of entry requirement and extension would not apply to students from peninsular Malaysia. But students from here and Sabah, who wish to attend courses in peninsular, will be considered under the new (lower) requirements, he added. The ministrys other institute in Sarawak is the Advance Technology Training Centre in Bintulu.
