The Fifth Sign Gospel reading: John 6:16-24 Video clip: https://youtube/watch?v=FiHlJZfVBXk The Fifth Sign: Walking on Water 16 When evening came, His disciples went down to the sea, 17 got into a boat, and started across the sea to Capernaum. Darkness had already set in, but Jesus had not yet come to them. 18 Then a high wind arose, and the sea began to churn. 19 After they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea. He was coming near the boat, and they were afraid. 20 But He said to them, “It is I. Don’t be afraid!” 21 Then they were willing to take Him on board, and at once the boat was at the shore where they were heading. **Verses 6:16-24 Jesus walking on water across the Sea of Galilee may be echoing Job 9:8 where God is said to walk on water. **Verses 6:16-17 The disciples were located on the eastern side of the lake when the cast off to row back ‘across the sea to Capernaum’ on the western side, a distance of approximately six or seven miles. **Verse 6:19 ‘After they had rowed about three or four miles’…if the feeding of the crowd had occurred on the eastern shoreline, the shortest distance to reach Capernaum would have been approximately six miles (some commentaries suggest 5-6 miles). **Verse 6:20 ‘It is I’ may overtones of revelation (Ex. 3:14). The statement may also allude to Ps. 77:16, 19, describing God’s manifestation to Israel during the Exodus. **Verse 6:21 The reference to the boat reaching the shore ‘at once’ may allude to Ps. 107:23-32. **Verse 6:23-24 ‘Tiberias’ was and is the chief city on the western side of the lake. Whereas Capernaum was located on the northwestern edge of the lake, with Tiberias being several miles to the south. HCSB Study Bible; Holman Christian Standard Bible
