The Filipino and The Right to Bear Arms Many people are of the belief that Filipinos do not have the right to bear arms. That we only have a privilege that can be withdrawn at any time by the state through its implementing arm, the government. This is a belief that’s beaten into the heads of the people, even lawyers while in law school. This is a mere opinion. The rights of the people do not come from a piece of paper agreed upon and written by strangers. The rights of the people are not granted by the state. The state is not our god. On the contrary, the power of the state comes from the people. The rights of each individual person comes from their humanity endowed by our creator, and the state/government is not my creator. Thus, the people can withdraw the power they have given the state at any time. Each and every individual has the right to defend his life, his person, his property and that of his family or others from any act of violence. By virtue of that right to self-defense a Filipino has the right to bear arms just as much as any other human in this world. Just as much right to bear arms as the Americans, who incidentally included the right to bear arms in writing in their constitution. Filipinos did not lose that right just because it isn’t written on the Philippine constitution. You are a free people, but you can only be free if you assert that freedom. These so called political leaders and their henchmen issue threats of violence on our person in the form of incarceration (kidnapping), taxes (extortion), license fees (extortion), penalties (extortion), if we do not comply with their “laws” and “rules.” What then differentiates them from the Spaniards who colonized this land in the 16th century? What distinguishes them from subjugators of a free people? The only distinction are the sham elections that we’re told to participate in every 3 years. Giving false hopes that they will make things better. If things are going to get better, we have to stop relying on these subjugators pretending to be leaders and we have to protect, help, love and understand each other. The answer is within each and every one of us.
