The First Recorded Immunization English physician Edward Jenner - TopicsExpress

The First Recorded Immunization English physician Edward Jenner purposely infected James Phipps with cowpox to prevent smallpox on May 14, 1796. This was the first recorded immunization to prevent a disease. Smallpox is one of the deadliest viruses in our history, killing more than 300 million people in the 20th century alone. Thirty years ago, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the virus eradicated. Now, only samples remain in high security labs in the US and Russia. Later this month, the WHO will meet to decide whether or not these virus samples should be destroyed forever. Using the Virus Lytic Cycle Gizmo, students can explore the reproduction cycle of a virus. As an extension, have students participate in a class discussion of why the WHO should, or should not, destroy the last remaining samples of the smallpox virus.
