The Fitchburg Public Library to Host a Special Showing of “Featherstone’s Flamingo: Pink and Proud” New Documentary traces the History of an Ever-Popular American Decorative Icon On Thursday November 6, 2014, the Fitchburg Public Library will present a Special Showing of “Featherstone’s Flamingo: Pink and Proud” at 7:00 p.m. in the Auditorium, at 610 Main Street. This new documentary traces the career of designer Donald Featherstone, a charismatic and creative artist whose design helped create the visual style of post-World War II America and its new leisure opportunities. The film program is free and open to the general public, light refreshments will be served. The filmmaker, Judith Lindstedt will be in attendance to answer questions; Don Featherstone and his wife Nancy will also be in attendance. In honor of the occasion it is suggested that everyone wear something pink. The Rusty Mikes, a vintage blues band, will entertain us in the Garden Room before and after the film. Donald Featherstone is a long time Fitchburg resident whose flamingo was first created in 1957, while he was working for Union Products in Leominster. Hugely popular in the 1960’s, the decorative plastic lawn sculpture has always been produced, and experienced a dramatic resurgence in sales and popularity during the 1980’s, as part of the 50’s-influenced “New Wave” styles. More recently, Featherstone’s pink flamingo was featured as a character in the animated Disney film “Gnomeo & Juliet.” The character was named after Don Featherstone. The pink flamingo continues to be produced by a Fitchburg company, who purchased the copyright in 2010. Judith Lindstedt, the Producer/editor of the film, is a teacher and dancer with many performances and awards to her credit. She has appeared at the Silver Slipper in Las Vegas, the Playboy Club in San Francisco, the Sporting Club in Monte Carlo, Monaco, the Casino Ruhl in Nice, France, and the Casino du Liban in Lebanon. Judith was also a Top Female Executive for the Fitchburg area in the 2012 Who’s Who. Judith is an award-winning producer, director, and editor of “An Uncommon View” on FATV & LATV since 1992. This project is supported by a grant from the Fitchburg Cultural Council, a local agency, and the Leominster Cultural Council, a local agency, which are supported by the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency.
