The Five Love Languages #4 – Acts of Service Acts of service require thought, planning, time, effort and energy. They include such actions as cooking a meal, setting the table, washing dishes, taking out the garbage, changing diapers, painting the bedroom, keeping the car in operating condition, dusting the blinds, trimming the hedge in the garden, etc. If done with a positive spirit, they are indeed expressions of love. Jesus Christ gave a simple but profound illustration of expressing love by an act of service. “Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” John 13:3-7 What people do for each other before marriage is no indication of what we will do after marriage. We must learn to express love for each other and be supportive of each other, not critical. It is important to make simple requests, and not forceful demands. Requests give direction to love, but demands stop the flow of love. Due to the sociological changes of the past 30 years, there is no longer a common stereotype of the male and female role in marriage. Couples need to openly discuss their expectations of each other and with the help of the Holy Spirit, agree on ways forward in their marriage. Amos 3:3 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 Galatians 5:13-15, 22-23. Think about it 1. What acts of service does my spouse value? 2. How can I make requests of my spouse and not demands? 3. Are Acts of Service my primary love language? Prayer Focus: Married: Speak to the Lord about your spouse and ask the Lord to show you what acts to perform. Single: pray that God should help you to become selfless and render service of value to friends around.
