The Five Signposts of Unitarian Spirituality I’ve chosen to use the Five Pillars of Islam, which also exist in some form in the Baha’i Faith and can be used as a framework to categorize practices of other religions, as a format to present and develop a possible format for “spirituality” for Unitarian Universalists and the wide theological diversity that they represent. Traditionally the Five Pillars of Islam are: 1) Shahadah (Declaration of Faith - “there is no God but God...”), 2) Salat (Daily Obligatory Prayer), 3) Saum (Fasting during Ramadan), 4) Hajj (Pilgrimage to Mecca and Medina), and 5) Zakat (Charitable Alms Giving). Here are the Five Signposts of Unitarian Spirituality: 1. The Truth is One, but the sages speak of it by many names. ~ Rig Veda. As Unitarians we recognize that we all come from the same Ultimate Source, whether we choose to call it the Universe, Nature, God or Goddess, Allah, the Ultimate Ground of Being, etc. and we recognize that we are all supported and nourished by its interdependent web of existence. Religions are human attempts within specific cultural frameworks to explain and relate to this Oneness. 2. It is helpful to have some type of daily practice or routine which helps us to develop a habit of mindfulness and gratitude towards the larger Universe as well as reinforce compassion towards others. Gathering in community on a regular basis also help to reinforce mindfulness, gratitude, and compassion. 3. Supplementary practices which assist us with not being enslaved to the whims of the body are also beneficial. These practices may be related to diet and fasting, body or breath awareness, meditation and mindful awareness practices, or simply walking in nature. 4. Occasional travelling to places which inspire us and cause us to experience awe and wonder can help reinforce our practice. 5. Charitable giving of our resources, whether time or money, helps us to concretely express compassion towards others.
