The Flesh and the Body and the Holy Spirit 9 Therefore, the physical body of man must be distinguished from the sinful nature of man. When we are born again of the Spirit of God we remain with our physical bodies but we become spiritual beings who are alive in Christ and are no longer carnal beings who are dead in sins and trespasses. And whereas the Holy Spirit does not fellowship with the sinful nature of man, He indwells the human body of each one who is born again. The human body is the physical instrument through which a person operates on earth. The members and desires of the physical body are God-given and are not sinful of themselves. Therefore, a person with a sinful nature will use the members and desires of his physical body to practice sin. But one who is born again of God with a righteous and holy nature can use the members and desires of his physical body to practice righteousness and holiness. And a day is coming when by the power of the resurrection the bodies of all who are born again will be changed into bodies fit to operate in the realm of the Kingdom of heaven. Romans 6:17-19: “But thanks be to God that you, having once been slaves of sin, have become obedient from the heart to the form of teaching to which you were entrusted, and that you, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to greater and greater iniquity, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness for sanctification.” Romans 8:8-9: “Those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him. Ephesians 2:1-5: “You were dead through the trespasses and sins in which you once lived, following the course of this world, following the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work among those who are disobedient. All of us once lived among them in the passions of our flesh, following the desires of flesh and senses, and we were by nature children of wrath, like everyone else. But God, who is rich in mercy, out of the great love with which he loved us even when we were dead through our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ.”
