The Flower Carpet in Grand Plaza, Brussels, Belgium. It is comprised of 750,000 live begonia flowers and measures 82 feet wide, 250 feet long, and nearly 20,000 square feet. The carpet is laid out annually to honor the Turkish migrants who came to the country 50 years ago to fill its severe labor shortage (a role they would play across Europe following the Second World War, especially in Germany). Today, over 230,000 Turkish nationals live in Belgium, a quarter of them in the capital of Brussels. The flowers represent Belgium, while the patterns are modeled after traditional Turkish tapestries. Starting with a giant sketch of the design drawn on a plastic sheet, around 120 volunteers spend between six and eight hours arranging live cut flowers along the patterns over the plazas stones. The magnificent display lasts about four days.
