The Forest, from a sketch by Eliza Allen Starr, governess of the Dunbar children. *Note this was not the original Forest that Thomas Rodney visited when William Dunbar was alive. It is unknown what happened to the first Forest though Thomas Rodney described it as a wonderful place and he visited often. This home was started after William Dunbar died in 1810, around 1816 his window began construction on this new Forest. This home in the sketch was the home of the Dunbar family for some 36 years. Sadly on a January morning in 1852 a chimney fire started at the home was destroyed in less than two hours. It was never rebuilt. Several of the original columns remained. The Forest property is south of Natchez, off of Hwy 61. Photos courtesy-MDAH Source: MDAH and Lost Mansions of Mississippi by Mary Carol Miller *Letter was written by William Dunbar and is a repost. Date: 5/4/1802 Letter, William Dunbar, Forest, to John Ellis, President of the Legislative Council, acquaints them with the knowledge that there is no law to authorize that slaves, running away from Spanish territory and taking refuge in free United States Northwest territory, be returned to their owners; fears that the Spanish could retaliate by adopting the same policy to the great harm of the Mississippi Territory and Louisiana; suggests remedy by law.
