The Foundation of a Successful Personal Brand: Your Platform Here are the four principles of an effective platform: 1. Reflect Reflection has two meanings. First, it’s an inward look at ourselves as we form an opinion or thought. The second is an outward expression of our thoughts and opinions; a result of our inward reflection. Both our inward reflection and our outward expression display our true image. Jesus clarified how He wanted his disciples to share their faith, “Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” In essence, Jesus said, If you believe in me and my teachings, values and principles, then live them. Let who you are speak for what you believe. Be a role model and practice what you preach. Let your outward actions, decisions, behaviors and communication reflect your inner beliefs and attitude. Let your nature and character be a living example of your faith. 2. Respect God places high value on the dignity and worth of all people – rich and poor, friend and foe. Our actions toward all should be based on love and respect. While the golden rule concept (do unto others as you would have them do unto you) is known by most cultures and religions, genuinely treating others with respect and dignity has become less prevalent. Often, the pressures placed upon us are so great that we inadvertently disrespect others through our words and actions. On our deepest levels, we want to be respected and affirmed as people of value and worth. Leaders who connect with others at this level will become significant, as respect is a powerful communication tool. As challenging as it may be to show respect to an underperforming employee, an unethical competitor or a demanding boss, it’s still the right attitude to have. 3. Reconcile Reconciliation has two components. First, on a personal level, a leader needs to reconcile his or her professional self with his or her spiritual core. This process will allow you to establish trust and credibility with the ones you lead. Second, the leader needs to reconcile with others. If, as a leader, you can genuinely communicate reconciliation to others, your influence will increase. 4. R + R + R = Raise Raise is the culmination of the first three Rs. Respect, reflect and reconcile all contribute to raising the dignity and value of mankind as a reflection of God. Raise has multiple definitions. It means raising a question instead of demanding an answer. Raising the spirit of another instead of putting another down. Raising the level of communication from conflict to civility. Raising the dignity and worth of another instead of lowering yourself to the insults of another. Raising the standards of excellence instead of accepting the mediocrity of political correctness. Each of these definitions point upward toward a higher level of communication – one that honors God and others. Who are you? What are the principles and beliefs on which you stand? Through the four principles of an effective platform, let who you are speak for what you believe.
