The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators that were supposed to give up some of their time from their normal lives and be public servants for a couple of months out of the year. But now that paradigm has been turned on its head and the norm is that Congressmen are expected to be career politicians with no ongoing outside business to limit the ability to use the power of the office to gain advantage in marketplace. Dr. Coburn ran into same issue with his practice, and the ethics rule committee basically told him that he could still practice, but not accept any money for it in return! Who can run a business like that? No wonder the country is in such bad shape.
