The Four-Year-Old carries around a pink plastic toy cell phone, talking into it constantly. It rings, he answers. I ask who hes talking to. Bob Biggles, he explains. Bob is exactly the same age as the FYO, and he likes exactly the same things. They talk a lot. The FYO walks through the living room in deep conversation. Later, I find the phone myself and make it ring. I say, Hello? The FYO looks over at me. I listen for a bit, and then I say to the FYO, Its Mob Miggles. Hes the identical twin of Bob Biggles. He says his feelings are hurt, because youre always talking to Bob, and never to him. The FYO answers instantly. He never calls me, he says. Never? I ask. He shakes his head. I am silenced.
