The Fruit of the Spirit - Peace A daily devotion based on Galatians 5:22-23 22 By contrast, the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against such things. New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) PEACE I have heard a great deal of talk about peace in the media recently. With people in lots of places at war with one another, and with these altercations escalating, it seems that the world-wide peace so many of us long for may still be a world away. But that doesnt mean that peace cant be a reality in our lives. Conflict may still occur around us, and we might not always be able to be at peace with everyone we know, but peace may be able to rest within us. I once saw two pictures representing peace. The first painting depicted a gentle stream winding through the middle of a meadow that was dotted with trees. (The Yosemite Valley came to mind.) The sky was clear, and the sun was blanketing the animals and plants with a perfect coating of sunshine. All was quiet. All were happy. A peaceful scene. The second painting stood in stark contrast. The setting was a craggy coastline (Maine or the Oregon coastline came to mind.) The day was not sunny. In fact, a storm raged. The wind was blowing, driving the fierce rain. The artist had cast a dark pall over the work. But there, under a rock ledge, if you looked closely enough, a bird had found some shelter. And the bird was singing. A peaceful scene. Peace may come sometimes when conflicts cease. And peace may also be found when, even in the midst of turmoil and strife, we can find a reason to sing. Prayer God, when Jesus was preparing to return to you, he told his disciples that His peace he would leave with them. Through your Spirit, stir that sense of peace within us, while we sing your praises in Christs name. Amen Steve Negley
