The Funeral Service of our late sister, comrade and friend Manku Maduwane and her niece Monica Maduwane will be jointly held this Sunday, 07-09-2014. The service starts at 08am to 11am at Kwa-Thema Community Hall. They will both be laid to rest at Vlakfontein Cemetery. Phumi Mthethwa’s message “I was born and grew up in Kwa-Thema. The township enjoyed a vibrant open and accepting lesbian and gay subculture in the 80s. As someone who came out around that time, it was warm and beautiful to be supported by people like Manko and MaThoko. Manko was the most visible leader of the 80s lesbian and gay struggle in the East Rand. She stood firm, bold and courageous. She offered refuge to so many coming out people, who had been chased away from their homes. Both are gone now. MaThoko in the 90s and Manko today. Another activist for queer liberation lost to cancer. Lala kahle qabane. Condolences to all her families. Nxese maqabane!”
