The GOODHOOD Art of Skateboarding exhibition and auction is now over so good luck to all those that bided! Read about the inspiration behind the boards here and heres what the artists had to say when asked what Southbank means to them: I adore the Southbank and spend so much time there, in terms of programming it’s second to none and architecturally its my favourite space in the whole of London. I never tire of its beautiful brutality it’s a magnificent landmark, something we should be proud of especially when our city is becoming increasingly filled with ugly buildings. ~ Trevor Jackson It represents the fact that London belongs to its citizens, not to big corporations who sell off public space for commerce and private profit. We need many more spaces like it for skating and other purposes. It was really important to take a stand. ~ Will Sweeney Im grateful to LLSB for fighting this battle and saving our heritage for future generations, they are amazing. Back in the day we would have just accepted the status quo, gone off built ourselves a ramp under some infected flyover. They have led a great campaign, brought in support from all previous generations of Southbank skaters and I think they have inspired a wider demographic to fight worthy battles. ~ Ged Wells To be honest Ive never been a skateboarder, growing up you were either into skateboarding or football and for me it was always football. Even so, I think it has such a strong identity within skateboarding and its important to keep things like this going as there seem to be fewer and fewer examples. I love architecture where things happen organically and end up being used for something other than their primary use which I believe was something the architects of the Southbank Centre always wanted to happen. Im glad its gonna stay! ~ Jiro Bevis I love that whole area, Im inevitably drawn to dystopian underplatters within modernist architecture a la my artistic perspective. The fact that Skateboarders have grown a creative phoenix that has risen out of the crumbling 70s electric fireplace hole is something that should be proudly cherished. Sad my knees will no longer allow me to skate there. ~ Daniel Sparkes Somewhere to have a wee when you’re lost in South London. ~ The Chapman Brothers A lot of classic skating... ~ Russell Maurice Brutalism, the Birdshit Banks, Simon Evans. ~ James Jarvis Southbank to me was always an infamous spot. I used to travel from outside of london to ride the banks there, and would spend all day in an around that area. When i moved to london I quickly realised the banks had their own locals and made friends so it was a welcoming place for a guy that had only just arrived in the big city as it were. Days would be spent riding, crashing, drinking, crashing, meeting new people, having fun and crashing...it was better than any skatepark, as it was a street spot, first and foremost, although at times it could get a little frustrating when there were a million people lined along the railing, peering in and watching me crash. I crashed there quite a lot... ~ Ornamental Conifer Hey teacher, leave those kids alone. ~ Ed Davis 100% of the money raised will go towards the LLSB campaign costs, the celebration jam costs and future LLSB work in the community. Thank you all! goodhoodstore/mens/news/1626
