The Galactics, Would like to give everyone a heartfelt thank you for supporting us in the Dead2Red Race both emotionally, mentally and financially by donating to our chosen charity earlier this year in 2014. There are a lot of corporate charity giants out there, many dedicated charity fundraisers will educate you that only a small percentage really goes to its original purpose, with the majority of the money getting lost in admin fees and advertising. Some have excessively large charity reserves, building up and collecting the interest by holding the money longer, some are in association with companies that in turn receive large tax reductions…but this shouldn’t deter you from donating, the best kind of giving is the your time, challenging yourself and making a prudent choice when picking a charity to donate to. Research and make an effort to try and speak to the charity representatives, whatever image or information the charity projects, from this perhaps you can grasp a small idea of where your money really goes. Sometimes supporting a smaller charity will have a bigger direct impact, like programmes that allow people to contribute their time and volunteer in local community run charities. The Desert Flower Foundation answered our phone call straight away, within seconds we had the opportunity to speak to the chairman and one of the founders, Walter (Chairman of The Desert Flower Foundation) explained in tremendous detail every step and process they take the moment they receive the funds. He was explicitly transparent and honest, explaining their chosen methods in the long road towards changing the opinions of governments and families from contributing further towards the barbaric cultural practice of Female Genital Mutilation. Your donations towards our race help sponsor two young girls in Sierra Leone, we have received pictures and details of our special little desert flowers all thanks to everyone’s support. In order to protect their identities due to the sensitive religious/political nature of this cause, pictures of our sponsored girls cannot be shared with a wider audience. The donations have secured their education till graduation, their families will receive a monthly allowance, and their parents have signed legally binding contracts to ensure that their daughters must never be cut or married too young. Not only that but our sponsored girls will be checked every month by a local female gynaecologist to make sure they have not been cut against their will so that they can continue to receive financial support and a free education. 100% of the money that goes to the Desert Flower foundation is used for its original purpose, the charity is entirely run by volunteers through a unique intelligent system. Although there is an Ebola crisis raging in Sierra Leone, we are relieved and ecstatic to continue to receive letters from our two sponsored girls. Furthermore we are delighted to share with you one of our letters from our little desert flower “Mabinity”.
