The Gallant Hours Great movie. Cagney came out of retirement to make this. At first glance, it appears to be another war movie, but no combat scenes are in the movie. To me, its a cross between a documentary and a drama. Its a movie about leadership. Admiral Halsey was called upon to turn things around at Guadalcanal. Many thought it a lost cause both on the American and Japanese sides. Halsey had to change the momentum quickly and do it on a shoe string budget. It was a logistical nightmare as well. We did not plan to go on the offensive in the Pacific so soon, but Japans rapid fire victories caught us off guard. Had we not stopped the Japanese here, they would have cut the supply lines to Australia and prolonged the war. Or worse. Another thing I liked was a matter of fact, balanced portrayal of each side.
