“The Gambler” Busts Out “The Gambler” is hard to watch, - TopicsExpress

“The Gambler” Busts Out “The Gambler” is hard to watch, like other movies about self-destructive human beings. I was never a much of a fan of the original, and gambling movies are mainly rote at this point. Like many movies, we don’t fully understand the motivations of Professor Jim Bennett and that poses a problem for the audience. Nor do we fully understand the motivations of his graduate student who is attracted to the tragic man falling apart. We do, however, clearly understand the motives of the gangsters, and while that makes the movie more interesting, it doesn’t make up for the lack of development of the main character. Why remake this movie? Why do another movie about gambling? What can you hope to show us that we haven’t seen before? Jim is not that interesting; he’s pretentious, he’s a cliche of a failed writer, and only a couple of scenes in the classroom were interesting. However, the scenes in the classroom were more original than the scenes of Jim gambling, and that is a sad testament to mediocrity.Rating: Rental It’s not that this is a terrible film, there just isn’t a lot to recommend it. If you love Wahlberg and gambling movies, go ahead. Otherwise, stream it or download it and it will help you pass the time with relatives next holiday season and teach the kids that gambling is the devil’s past-time.
