The Gambler Literature professor Jim Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) leads - TopicsExpress

The Gambler Literature professor Jim Bennett (Mark Wahlberg) leads a secret life as a high-stakes gambler. Always a risk-taker, Bennett bets it all when he borrows from a gangster and offers his own life as collateral. Staying one step ahead, he pits his creditor against the operator of an illicit gambling ring while garnering the attention of Frank (John Goodman), a paternalistic loan shark. As his relationship with a student (Brie Larson) deepens, Bennett must risk everything for a second chance (IMDB) Review: Mark Wahlberg in a drama? Yep, pretty much, and a relatively slow one at that. Jim Bennett is a notorious gambler who cant seem to get it together and continues to go down the wrong path by borrowing money from loan sharks who will get there money back one way or another. Mark Wahlberg tries very hard to come across as an educated literature professor but lets be honest, its Mark Wahlberg and he isnt the greatest actor in Hollywood so it wasnt a very convincing roll but the script was honest enough to keep you somewhat engaged enough to get you through the film. Also stars John Goodman. The Gambler gambles on an its audience in this forgettable mediocre drama that would of likely been missed if it didnt star an A list actor. C- Rated R Runtime 1hr 51 min
