The Garry Winogrand restrospective at the Jeu Du Paume Gallery in - TopicsExpress

The Garry Winogrand restrospective at the Jeu Du Paume Gallery in the Tuilleries is the first of its kind ever for someone who died too early and left over 250,000 images still to be chosen and printed. Ive had a fondness for his works. Theyre in the same category as that of Robert Frank, William Klein and Cartier Bresson. Where he differs is that instead of the dramatic poses captured, as Bresson would put it The decisive moment, Winogrand captures pathos, exuberance and love in more raw circumstances. More street emotions that we would have liked to capture if we had his intuitiveness readying the camera and shooting away. The French have taken to Winogrands work and like myself relate to it because of its period. America of the sixties before Vietnam, before the hippies, a world of beehive hairs and cultural deterioration that would soon usher in a revolutionary culture I was part of. But having grown up in Camelot America, there were still many parts of it to admire. One is the verve and exuberance of its people. And coming from feudal monastic Philippines, it was very refreshing.
