The Gaston County Unit of the NAACP extends profound and heartlelt sympathy to the Brown Family in the loss of their loved one, Michael. Michael was a young man preparing to matriculate college, but now his family is preparing for his funeral-a grim reminder of our countrys broken, ineffective and unjust system of law enforcement that harbors some angry and ill-prepared police among their ranks. As the Missouri State Conference and the St. Louis Unit of the NAACP seek answers about the circumstances surrounding Michael Browns death, Gaston County Unit , along with the national and North Carolina state conference will remain vigilant until accountability and justice are served for the numerous individuals who lose their lives to misguided policy practices in Ferguson and other cities throughout the country. Michaels death and actions by the Ferguson Police Department is a distressing symptom of the untested and overly aggressive culture of police that has become commonplace in minority communities throughout the country--far too long. Too often have the defensible fear of people of color and the abuse of power by those unlawful few in uniforms of blue produced fatal results--death at the very hands of those who take oath to serve and protect. The NAACP and our allies will not stand down until accountability and justice in cases of police misconduct are served for Michael Brown and the countless other men and women who have lost their lives to such police discrimination. Too, we call on those whom we have elected to office to become partners in the fight for equality and fairness, because now is the time to ensure that all communities can live safely--both safe from violence at the hands of criminals and safe from violence at the hands of police. So it is with profoundest sympathy that the Gaston County Unit of NAACP wishes that the Brown Family finds Gods gracious love in every memory of your loved one. Michael-- giving you the strength and the peace you need to get through these difficult days of bereavement.
