The Gathering of the Tribes II casual get-together for the JHS - TopicsExpress

The Gathering of the Tribes II casual get-together for the JHS classes of 1968 to 1975 (and all other Jericho peeps) at the Homestead in Oyster Bay is less than two weeks away, on Saturday, June 7, 2014, at 7:30. Click the link at the bottom of this post for your invitation. Below are the latest folks to sign up for the big party, plus the full guest list so far. This email update is a few days late because two-fifths of your reunion committee just got back from Florida. Partly we were there to visit our respective families but also to conduct a reunion-related fact-finding mission, thus making the trip fully tax deductible. Specifically, we wanted to discover the elements that make for an amazing, fun party, and what better place to learn the secrets of entertaining the masses than the Boynton-Boca-Delray triangle of the Sunshine State, with its millions of gated senior communities and clubhouses. We observed 95th birthday parties, bridge club get-togethers, Mens Club powwows where the dominant topic seemed to be something about enlarged prostates, and other events in some five dozen clubhouses in communities with bucolic names such as El Rancho Dressing, La Mirage (funny, couldnt find it—itd seem to loom right in front of us, but as soon as we pulled up to the gun turret manned by a security guard, it would just ... disappear!), and the criminally misnamed Chlamydia Gardens. (Clearly, that builder mistook a medical textbook for a botanical encyclopedia). The newest trend, we discovered, is communities designed specifically for the sports-obsessed senior. Theres the 18th Hole, another called Bottom of the Ninth, Final Overtime (Sudden Death), Two-Minute Warning, and so on. Our takeaway from day after day of observing the fast-paced world of the senior-community clubhouse is that a great party must have these three crucial elements: 1. Orthopedic shoes. Not sure how this contributes to folks having a great time; maybe they help to keep everyone grounded. 2. Casseroles! So, everyone, please bring a lukewarm, foil-covered Corningware dish with you to the Homestead. 3. Entertainment! South Floridas gated communities are swarming with would-be talent playing the senior circuit in the hopes of being discovered and at long last grasping that golden ring: a dinner-theater gig somewhere near Ocala. Tribute acts are highly popular, on the order of: Frankie Potatoes is Frank Sinatra! Another attraction, Bachman-Turner Overweight, made up of four beefy Canucks in their sixties dedicated to re-creating that signature BTO sound, has been leaving clubhouse crowds wheezing and gasping for breath. (Although, admittedly, a leisurely game of dominoes seems to exert the same effect.) Or how about the Nathan Birnbaum Experience: a convivial octogenarian ukulele plucker who channels Jimi Hendrix, climaxing his act by falling to his knees in the middle of Foxey Lady, squirting chicken fat all over his instrument, and lighting it on fire. Gotta tell ya: the old people go outta their freakin minds! Thanks to this informative, tax-deductible Florida excursion, now were able to doubly guarantee you a swell time a week from Saturday night, June 7. Before you peruse the ever-expanding guest list, remember to contact Phil by next weekend if youd like to go on a guided tour of Jericho High School the morning of the big party. Note: The time has been moved up a half hour to 10:30 a.m. Ms. Lois Smith will meet you in the front lobby, by the entrance to the auditorium.
