The Gila National Forest hosted a public meeting at the Grant County Veterans’ Business and Conference Center at 6 p.m. Monday regarding the Signal Fire, burning about 10 miles north of Pinos Altos. According to Silver City District Ranger Russ Ward, the Signal Fire was spotted by personnel manning the Signal Peak Lookout at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 11. It was originally 1 acre in size, then “in a heartbeat,” Ward said, it raced toward Signal Peak and by 6 p.m. had charred 2,700 acres. Acting Gila National Forest Public Information Officer Punky Moore, stated the Signal Fire has grown to 4,700 acres and is 0 percent contained. About 507 personnel are involved in extinguishing the blaze, she told the Daily Press.
