The Girl in the Shiny New Car…episode 13…One for the Road… Jim finished his breakfast and then sat there, smoking a cigarette and drinking coffee while Clara continued to pick at her food. “Thought you were hungry?” he asked impatiently. She just looked up at him; a half smile trying to escape from her sad face. “Look,” he continued. “I want you to know I don’t blame your brother for kill’n mine. Not directly anyway,” He went on to explain. “Me and Sam were involved in some shady stuff, have been before. It’s a risk in this business.” Clara appreciated Jim’s words. She knew what her brother was into. Both he, and she, had doged bullets before. She also knew that one day there would come a bullet no one could dodge. “So, who did this,” asked Jim. “Giovanni,” replied Clara. “The hit man was one of his flunky’s.” ‘Well,’ Jim thought, that’s a name everybody knew. Narrows down who to hunt. “Tell me about this lake house,” said Jim. Hoping to change her mood by changing the subject. “Well,” said Clara, still shoving her food around with her fork. “You ever heard of the Shoreline Village Resort?” “Sure,” replied Jim. “Not a Jew in Michigan hadn’t heard of it. Only place we could go. Started by that one eared bastard Abe Goldberg.” “You know Mr. Goldberg?” Clara asked. “Lefty? I know of him; I don’t know him. He and us ain’t exactly the best of friends,” Jim answered. “Well, we and Mr. Goldberg are. My brother and I were starving on the street when Mr. Goldberg hired my brother as one of his club fighters,” Clara said with a slight tone of anger. “Anyway,” she continued more calmly, “Mr. Goldberg owned all the land around the resort and decide to build vacation cabins on it. Both Jews and blacks could buy them. He also got me in the movies. In exchange for a house, I would come up and entertain at his resort during the summer season.” “Singing,” she added least his thought wander in another direction. “Ready to go?” asked Jim; convinced she wasn’t going to finish her food. Now at least he knew where they were headed. He got a coffee to go, paid the bill and the two took off, still headed north.
