The Giver, Movie Review - I had no idea what I was getting into when I watched this. I had never heard of the book nor knew anything about the movie other than the trailer that I watched once. So went into this one blind only knowing that it starred Jeff Bridges who usually makes good script choices and Meryl Streep who likewise makes good script choices. I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed this compelling story of a society that erased all the memories of each person and lived in a completely sterile community with no outside influence taking a drug daily that eliminates emotion so everyone is exactly the same with the only exception being how they look. Streep is head of the, Elders, who decide everything for the community including who lives and dies. Of this I will NOT give away a major part of the plot. Bridges is The Giver who is the only person with prior memories in order to provide wisdom from the past to help the Elders. One young man is assigned to The Giver to learn of the memories and to become the new Giver. This is where the story gets even more interesting and the movie becomes action based. A solid story with a very strong commentary on the failings of a Socialistic society. Bridges and Streep as one would expect are good in their respective roles. The learner and his friends do a decent job in their roles making the movie solid from the acting stand point. A sleeper that you wont want to miss. 3 3/4 stars out of 5.
