The Goannas headed out to Macquarie Uni on Saturday looking to return to the winners circle. The two clubs have built quite the rivalry in recent years and a tough contest was expected. It was the Warriors who got the better of the start, controlling the game and limiting the opportunities for the Goannas. At quarter time the margin was 25 points however the second quarter saw a change of fortunes as the Goannas came right back into the contest. 4 goals of their own whilst keeping the opposition to just 2 behinds saw the Goannas trailing by just 2 points at half time and the game was up for grabs. A tight third quarter saw the Warriors kick the only 2 goals for the quarter to edge 14 points ahead st the last change. In the last quarter the Goannas gave it everything they had to snatch the win, but any inroads they made were countered by Mac Uni, who ended up holding on to record a 16 point win. Trent Schmutter was best on ground with a great game off half back, with Michael Stacey providing great support in defence. Jordan Pidgeon, Scott Maguire and Ryan Terrey were excellent in the midfield, while Ben Rodgers again proved to be an excellent target up forward. Goannas 8.3.51 v Macquarie Uni 10.7.67 The Goannas Seniors (still 5th) travel to Waverley Oval (Bondi Road, Bondi Junction) to take on UTS (4th) on Saturday at 12.00 noon, in a game they must win to stay in touch of the top teams. The Goannas Reserves were looking to make it a hat trick of wins when they took on Moorebank at Rosedale Park. After a slow start last week the team was looking to hit the ground running, but a determined Moorebank were up for the challenge and matched it with the Goannas, with the margin just one point in the Goannas favour at quarter time. The second quarter saw the Goannas begin to take control of the game, kicking 3 goals to one to open the lead up to 19 points at half time. There was no letting up from the Goannas on their return from the sheds, dominating the third quarter, shutting out the Magpies and extending the margin to 41 points at the last change. With the match all but over, the teams fought out the last quarter with nothing but pride on the line, and when the final siren sounded the Goannas had triumphed by 39 points. Sireli Fifita was outstanding around the ground and was judged best afield. David Hook and Matt Ophof were also fantastic in the midfield, while Mark Hill and Scott Battye both provided big strong targets for the team up forward. Rob Alexander continued his outstanding form in the backline with another great game. Goannas 10.15.75 v Moorebank 5.6.36 Can the Ressies make it 4 in a row? This Saturday they take on Randwick at Pioneers Park (Anzac parade, Malabar) at 12.00 noon. The Div 5 boys were looking to bounce back from a disappointing game last week and secure that elusive first win against Moorebank. The team made a great start, controlling the game right from the first bounce but were not able to take full advantage, with wayward kicking restricting the lead to 17 points. The Goannas continued to pile on the pressure in the second quarter, ensuring that the Magpies were held goalless in the first half, and extending the lead to 45 points at half time. The game tightened up in the third quarter, but the Goannas still maintained the upper hand, and at the start of the last quarter the lead was out to 47 points and the first win was all but locked up. The last quarter saw the Goannas complete the domination, and only continued inaccurate kicking prevented them from reaching triple figures, but it meant little as they recorded a resounding 75 point win to break their duck. Jesse Haurua was fantastic all game and was named best on ground, with Dash Abeygoonawardana and Luke Pierce also in great form in the midfield. Matt Smith and Michael Robertson were brilliant in defence while Peter Dumesny had a great captains game. Goannas 11.16.82 v Moorebank 1.9.15 The Goannas Div 5 play at Harrington Park (Sir Warwick Fairfax Drive, Harrington Park) on Saturday at 10.00 am against the Camden Cats. No sleep in this weekend lads. The Goannas Under 19’s were hopeful of following the lead of the Division 5 team and breaking their duck for the season against Moorebank. Early on it was seen that the boys would be facing a tough task, as Moorebank took control early and looked in ominous form. The boys to their credit did not slacken off at any point during the game, and kept fighting to ensure Moorebank had to work for it for the whole game. However the damage done early was too much to overcome and the Magpies secured a convincing win. Jalaal Sulemam was named best on ground, with Steve Smith, Harry Spiteri, Miguel Linsom, Jake Nolan and Sam Bridie also performing admirably. Goannas 3.3.21 v Moorebank 15.19.109 An even earlier start for the Under 19s this Saturday. They play the Southern Power at Gwawley Oval (Taren Point Road, Caringbah) at 8.30 am. Might be best to pitch a tent Friday night boys on the oval down there! The Goannas Under 17 team were hoping to shake the curse that has found its way to Goanna Park, when they traveled to Tom Hunter Oval at Faulconbridge to take on the 2013 Premiers, Blue Mountains. The curse was going nowhere, in fact, thought it might step it up a bit, when our CHB Aidan pulled out after being concussed the day before and wingman Nick limped into the rooms before the game after doing a hammy at soccer, also the day before. We already have CHF Daniel waiting to return from a broken wing, ruckman Jamie has moved to Albury, and our gun recruit Simon still away with a sore elbow from 2 weeks ago. The bigger, older Blue Mountains boys played the small ground well and before we knew it they had 8 goals to none on the board, and the game was all but gone, A few heads dropped which made the flow of goals easier for the Kangaroos, but most of the boys kept plugging away. When Michael and Ryan hobbled off the ground, we were left with just 10 fit players to finish the game and a scoreboard that looked ugly. One would think that the luck must change, so we get back on the horse (training this week) and we have another crack next weekend. We appreciate we have the youngest team in the comp, so we wont give up. Goannas 5.4.34 v Blue Mountains 19.10.124 The Goannas Under 17s travel to Greenway Park (Greenway Drive, West Hoxton) to take on the GW Tigers on Sunday at 3.00 pm. A big thanks to Kristin Carville for his match reports.
