The Good Morning, Lord Devotional Today I will remember that I don’t have your big-picture perspective on those prayers that you have chosen not to answer as I would have liked you to. In 1872, geographer, explorer, and statistician Francis Galton conducted a research project to see if he could mathematically prove whether or not prayer works. His theory was simple: if prayer works, then the British royal family should live longer than any of their subjects, since they were prayed for regularly in churches and homes across the British Isles. However, when he compared the royal family’s longevity with that of the general public, he found no difference. He therefore concluded that he had proven prayer does not work. (Galton did not, however, investigate the dietary habits or exercise regimens of Queen Victoria or Prince Albert!) So how would Mr. Galton fit into today’s world? Well, if you ask people in the United States if they believe in prayer, I think the majority of us would say that we do. The great divide would come when we started defining prayer, stating why we pray, and identifying who we believe we are praying to. Spend some time thinking about those three aspects as well as about specific evidence from your own life that prayer does work. But let’s rephrase that! Think about the evidence in your own life that God does indeed answer the prayers of his people!
